Ingredients
- 1 pound ground turkey
- 1⁄2 cup breadcrumbs
- 1⁄4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- 1⁄4 cup finely chopped red onion
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 tablespoon chili powder
- 1 teaspoon ground cumin
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1⁄2 teaspoon paprika
- 1⁄4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
- 1⁄2 teaspoon salt
- 1⁄4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 large egg
- 4 whole wheat hamburger buns
- 1⁄2 cup sliced avocado
- 1⁄4 cup salsa
- 1⁄4 cup chopped fresh cilantro
Instructions
1. Preheat your grill or stovetop grill pan to medium-high heat.
2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground turkey, breadcrumbs, grated Parmesan cheese, finely chopped red onion, and olive oil.
3. Add the chili powder, ground cumin, garlic powder, paprika, cayenne pepper, salt, and black pepper to the bowl.
4. Crack the large egg into the mixture and use your hands or a spoon to thoroughly combine all the ingredients.
5. Form the mixture into four even patties, making sure each patty is about the same size and thickness for even cooking.
6. Place the patties on the preheated grill or grill pan.
7. Cook the patties for about 5-6 minutes on each side or until the internal temperature reaches 165°F.
8. While the burgers are cooking, toast the whole wheat hamburger buns on the grill or in a separate pan for 1-2 minutes until lightly browned.
9. Once the patties are done, remove them from the grill and set them aside.
10. Spread a small amount of salsa on the bottom half of each toasted hamburger bun.
11. Place one turkey burger patty on top of the salsa-covered bun.
12. Top each patty with sliced avocado and a sprinkle of chopped fresh cilantro.
13. Place the top half of the bun on each burger.
14. Serve the spicy Southwest turkey burgers immediately with your favorite side dishes.
Notes
For juicier burgers, consider adding a tablespoon of water or chicken broth to the mixture.
If you prefer a milder version, reduce or omit the cayenne pepper and use a milder salsa.
For a richer flavor, swap the breadcrumbs for crushed tortilla chips for added crunch and a more Southwest-inspired taste.
Ensure the turkey patties are not over-mixed to keep them tender; handle gently when forming patties.
Serve with a side of sweet potato fries or a mixed green salad for a well-rounded meal.
