Description

High in protein and lower in fat, this healthy turkey sloppy joe recipe is easy to whip up and makes a delicious, family-friendly dinner to complement your favorite side dishes!


Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground turkey
  • â…“ cup green bell pepper, seeded and diced
  • ½ cup yellow onion, diced
  • 1 tsp garlic, minced
  • hamburger buns
  • Sauce:
  • 8 oz tomato sauce
  • Âľ cup ketchup
  • 1 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1½ tbsp yellow mustard
  • ÂĽ tsp chili powder
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp ground black pepper
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ½ tsp onion powder
  • ½ tsp paprika

Instructions

1. In a large skillet over medium-high heat, add the ground turkey. Cook for 6–8 minutes or until browned, breaking it up with a spatula.

2. Add diced onions and green peppers to the skillet. Cook for 4–5 minutes, or until softened.

3. Drain off any excess grease from the skillet.

4. Add all sauce ingredients to the skillet. Stir well and simmer uncovered for 6–8 minutes, or until the sauce thickens.

5. Serve the turkey mixture on your favorite hamburger buns and enjoy.

Notes

* Hamburger buns are not included in the nutritional calculation.

For a healthier option, serve on a whole wheat bun or lettuce wrap. You can also serve the sloppy joe mixture over rice or quinoa.

Pair with a green salad, roasted veggies, or sweet potato fries for a complete meal.
